about

A Road Trip On Mars

On a dark rainy day in February 2019 my longest time musical partner and brother Rob Shannon sent me a little guitar piece (as is oft our want to do) and I spent the remainder of that day turning that ditty into a much larger composition. That tune is named ‘Seed’. From then until the middle of April I recorded at least a new tune every day. This album contains the highlights of that burst of creativity.

I asked Dan Holland, who is an absolute piano/keys master, to put some great solos on some tracks. He also did some extended improvisations of delicious sounding chord sequences from which I cut up and arranged into tunes.

John Maddox bass player extraordinaire, came by one afternoon and did what he does on a few tunes. He didn’t even listen to them first. Genius!

I like to write and compose getting inspired by sounds and grooves. Everything you hear on this album is pretty much improvised in one take. I’m jamming out a tune on one of my instruments and then I quickly add the rest. Groove is king and it always comes first. I always think one take or first take has the magic multiple attempts just don’t ever have. I guess this makes it more a ‘jazz’ recording but it doesn't sound like it.

I’ve spent way longer mixing and mastering this recording than I did playing it.

The sounds you can create with modern synth libraries are endless. It is easy to create atmospheric colours and sequences that evoke dreamlike vistas and sci-fi-ish soundtracks. The electric guitar sounds I like to find make me think of alien worlds too.

Mars, the planet of war, is the inspiration and theme here. This might be a soundtrack for exploring a new world. You might be a long way from home. This might lead you back or lead you on. Download this for your all terrain vehicle and come on a journey into the great unknown.
